Piriform body, with long neck attached. There is a bamboo strip around the edge of the table where it is attached to the body. The fretted neck does not have a pegbox, and pegs for thin metal strings are inserted directly into it from the front and the side. Alternate triangles of mother of pearl and tortoiseshell are inlaid around the edge of the table. The neck is decorated with inlaid circles of mother of pearl. The tanbur is similar in appearnace to the lutes of ancient Babylon and Egypt. Today it may be found in use from the Balkans to the Middle East.
