Back is of two pieces of quartersawn maple, with the figure slanting up from the center. Ribs, neck and scroll are of maple. Table is of spruce. Though this and other violins are labeled as being made in Frankfurt-am-Main, Herrmann is often listed as a violin maker of Berlin-Charlottenburg. In Frankfurt he was involved primarily in a piano business; he moved to Charlottenburg shortly after turning his attention toward violins.
